This brings back memories! Wow, it’s been 10 years already? Faceless was a great book and I loved it, especially since we read it along side books like Othello and She Stoops to Conquer. Although I don’t remember much about the book I do recall Kabria’s funny car and a character called poison.
And Purple Hibiscus was a classic! I love Chimmanda’s works, but this is my favourite so far. She transported us to Nsukka while we were at the comfort of our homes. The scene where papa burns Jaja’s legs is still shocking to me. Chimmanda is indeed a great storyteller.
But one book I would love to read again is The Joy of Motherhood.
I don’t think you can read Faceless and not remember Kabria’s car 😂 Creamy was a character on its own.
I completely forgot about the scene with the hot water in Purple Hibiscus so when I read it this time, I was shocked and had to put down the book for a few seconds to recover.
I’ve never read The Joys of Motherhood, but all of Buchi Emecheta’s books (I’ve read only one) are on my TBR.
Hey Fatima, you made me want to re read Purple hibiscus too. I think it was my entry point to Adichie's work before she her rise and fall into African feminist stardom. I have my qualms about her but I'm still reading her latest, Dreamcount and one thing is sure : that woman can write.
Yup, I have qualms about her too but read all her books and fell in love with them before I developed those qualms 😭 I’d love to hear your thoughts on Dream Count when you finish, by the way.
I still remember how I felt when I first read Faceless in secondary school. I was upset, I wanted to help girls like Fofo, but I didn’t even know how. I plan on re-reading it now that I’m older.
And Purple Hibiscus..easily my favorite novel of all time. As someone who attended a university staff school for both Primary and Secondary school, Nsukka felt like home. I still plan on visiting the campus and going into one of the houses in the quarters, picturing Amaka and Obiora’s laughter filling the air.
Also, Shout out to the amazing women out there who play the role of Aunty Ifeoma to girls like Kambili.
I was looking forward to reading about what you thought of Father Amadi😅. If they ever decide to make an adaptation of this book, I will want Ebuka Obi Uchendu to act as Father Amadi. I know Father Amadi is a lot younger than Ebuka, but I still want him to act that role.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. I have a lot of THOUGHTS on Father Amadi I intentionally didn’t include to avoid spoilers but I’m going to send you a voice note about it.
